# Creating a study

> Use the AI Study Builder to go from research question to ready-to-launch study in minutes.

Tell Humanize what you want to learn and it builds everything for you — discussion guide, screener, and settings.

## How the AI Study Builder works

## Study types

Most studies are focus groups — several participants in one live session, reacting to each other. Two other formats are available:

| Type              | What it is                                                                                                                    |
| ----------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Focus group**   | Several participants in one live video session. The default, and self-serve.                                                  |
| **1:1 interview** | One participant, one moderator. Better for sensitive topics or detailed walkthroughs where group dynamics get in the way.     |
| **Survey**        | Participants answer your questions on their own, with no live session. Useful for reach when you don't need the conversation. |

## Study language

Studies run in **English (US)** and **Canadian French**. Pick the language when you create the study — the builder writes the guide and screener in it, participants see the session in it, and results come back in it. For non-English studies, results carry a **Show English translation** toggle so you can read them without speaking the language.

The AI moderator's voice supports considerably more than that. If you need a study in another language, [get in touch](mailto:support@humanize.app) — the moderator can speak any of the following, and we'll set the study up for you:

## Who can see your study

Studies are visible to everyone in your workspace by default. Set a study to **Private** and only you and the people you add to it can see it — useful for sensitive research, or work you're not ready to share internally.

You can add and remove people at any time. Switching a private study back to public asks you to confirm, since that exposes it to the whole workspace.

## Tips

* **Start with the AI builder.** You can always edit the generated guide afterward. It's faster than building from scratch.
* **Be specific about what you want to learn.** "How do people feel about our onboarding?" gives better results than "tell me about users."
* **Don't over-scope.** One clear research question per study. If you have three, run three studies.

## Drafts and publishing

Edits save as a draft first — a dot on the builder header shows when you have unpublished changes. **Save Changes** keeps your draft; **Publish** makes it live. You can rework a guide without affecting a study that's mid-recruitment.

Every published version is kept. Open the version menu in the builder to see the history, preview any earlier version, and restore it if the rewrite went the wrong way.

## Study lifecycle

Once you launch, your study moves through four stages:

| Status        | What it means                                  |
| ------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| **Draft**     | Still being designed. Edit anything.           |
| **Active**    | Live. Participants can join, sessions can run. |
| **Completed** | Sessions are done. Results available.          |
| **Archived**  | Stored for reference, no longer active.        |

  Finalize your screener before you launch. Once participants start answering it, changing it means different people were asked different questions — which breaks segments, quotas, and any comparison across your sample.
