A survey has no live session. Participants pass the screener, then answer your questions on their own. The builder shows Survey Questions where an interview shows its discussion guide.

Sections and questions

Questions sit in sections. Add a question with Add Question and pick its type: A section can also be a concept test, which repeats its questions for each concept. More on concepts.

Question settings

  • Rating Scale: the scale starts at 0 or 1 and ends anywhere from 2 to 10. Label the two ends, or every point. Use NPS (0 to 10) sets up a Net Promoter question.
  • Matrix: write the statements and the scale points. Shuffle rows shows the statements in a different order to each participant.
  • MaxDiff: choose how many sets each participant sees and how many options each set holds, three to six.
  • Constant Sum: set the total the shares add up to, in points or percent. Participants can’t continue until their numbers add up.

Option settings

Open the menu beside an option to change how it behaves:
  • Exclusive: clears other picks suits “None of the above.” Picking it clears every other pick.
  • Other: asks for their own words adds a text box when a participant picks the option.
Each option can also carry an export Code, the number it exports as in a coded CSV.

Showing questions to some participants

Use Only show this question if on a question, or Add display logic from a section’s menu. A condition can read an earlier answer, how many options someone picked, or one of the screener’s variables. Choose whether all conditions or any of them must match. A question can’t depend on a question that comes after it.

Repeating and reusing answers

  • Repeat for each pick asks a section once for each option a participant picked in an earlier question. For example, ask about each brand they use. You can set which picks come first, which are always asked, and Repeat at most. A section can be a repeat or a concept test, not both.
  • Options the respondent picked builds a question’s options from an earlier answer. On a matrix, it reuses the rows a participant answered. An exclusive pick never carries over.
  • Insert value puts an earlier answer, a variable, the pick a repeat is about, or a concept’s title or description into a question’s text. Each shows as a chip. Typing @ or { in the question opens the same list where you’re typing. Typed by hand, they read {{Q2.answer}}, {{var.Household size}}, {{loop.pick}}, and {{concept.title}}. The builder flags any other {{…}}, which participants would see as typed.

Reading the results

Responses show on the study’s Responses tab as they come in, with no wait for analysis:
  • Summary shows a chart per question, with each chart’s base.
  • Responses shows a table with one row per participant. Click a name to read all of their answers.
Filter by segment or by answer, or compare up to five segments side by side. Export a CSV With answer text or With option codes. When responses are in, press Run Analysis to get themes and findings from the written answers. More on results.
